May 18-22, 2005
This conference has already concluded,
but you can read all about it in our most recent newsletter!
Dear CAM Members,
Please find enclosed the registration materials for this year’s General Conference of the Catholic Association of Musicians. We will again meet at the Little Portion Retreat and Training Center in Eureka Springs. Please note that this year the conference is open to all CAM members, regardless of membership type.
Our Ninth General Conference will take place on May 18-22, 2005; it will begin on Wednesday evening and end on Saturday after evening Liturgy. There will be a jam session one night, similar to the informal session we did last year at the retreat center. The room and board cost for the retreat center is $195. This includes 9 full meals, one snack, one continental breakfast, four nights of lodging. Accommodations at the retreat center are limited. Overflow will be placed at a local motel, close to the retreat center. Please include a deposit of $100.00 per person when you send in the enclosed registration form. Deposits must be received by March 31, 2005.
| A minimum of 30 paid registrations must be received by March 31, 2005. If the conference is cancelled due to low attendance after that date, CAM will not be responsible for refunds of any airfare or other expenses except the registration deposit. |
This year’s dues were due to be paid on January 1, 2005. Those of you who have not paid dues will NOT be eligible to attend this year’s conference until dues are paid. Please send your check for dues to Maureen Hayes 512 Columbia Street, Cohoes, NY, 12047.
For those of you flying to this event, we can provide airport transportation for those arriving on Wednesday, and leaving on Sunday, for a donation of $45.00 per person. This cost will cover your ride both to and from the airport. In order to take advantage of this transportation, plan to arrive at the new Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport near Fayetteville, Arkansas on Wednesday by 3:00 pm, and have a flight out on Sunday after 10:00AM. When booking flights please keep in mind that our retreat center is about a 2-hour drive from the Fayetteville airport. If you will need transportation at any other dates and times, and you will not be renting a car, you can use the Express Shuttle (1-866-535-0127). Please send the enclosed flight information form by April 15, 2004.
Please e-mail me at lynngeyer@yahoo.com with any questions you might have. We look forward to our next meeting with you, and pray that God will bless your ministry and keep you safe in His loving care.
Respectfully yours in Christ,
Lynn Geyer

CAM 2005 Conference Highlights
John Michael Talbot - Catholic Spirituality
John Michael Talbot is Catholic music's number one recording artist with 47 albums, 17 books and numerous video teachings on ministry to the poor, simple living, Franciscan and monastic community living, and is a well-known teacher and speaker. He is the founder and General Minister of the Brothers and Sisters of Charity at Little Portion Hermitage, a unique religious community that encompasses celibates, singles, and families, and is the only community of its type in the United States to be granted canonical status in the Catholic Church. John Michael is also the founder and president of the Catholic Association of Musicians.
Tom Booth - Youth Ministry
When Tom Booth finished college, he told God he would do "anything except youth ministry." Yet that’s exactly where God led him, giving him a gift for understanding youth and young adults and the challenges of their culture. With musical influences from both secular and Christian sources, Tom’s goal is to write music that reaches where "life is lived," music that is truly scriptural and liturgical, and not watered down for a young audience.
Tom’s collections contain music for all ages, with a special emphasis on teenagers. He has composed three number one hits on the Contemporary Christian Music charts. YOU! Magazine has twice named Tom as one of the top Catholic music performers for teens, and his Unity-Award-winning song "Taste of Heaven," which is featured on Change Me, was named Rock Song of the Year in 2000 by the United Catholic Music and Video Association. He was even commissioned to write and perform songs for Mother Teresa and the theme song — "Cry the Gospel" — for the youth event during Pope John Paul II’s visit to St. Louis in 1999.
In addition to composing and recording his music, Tom serves as music and youth minister at St. Timothy Catholic Community Center in Mesa, Arizona. He also directs the music for the national LIFE TEEN program, one of the most successful ministries for helping Catholic youth to form, or solidify, a relationship with God. He has developed and implemented a confirmation program for teens, and has also instructed a Rite of Christian Initiation for Teens. He travels extensively as a concert musician and workshop clinician, performing and teaching at music and liturgy conferences and youth rallies.
Bob Halligan - Songwriting Workshop
Singer-songwriter Bob Halligan Jr. has seen his tunes rack up sales of 30 million units since his first hit in 1980. Among the artists who’ve covered his songs are: Cher, KISS, Michael Bolton, Judas Priest, Kathy Mattea, Rebecca St. James, Joan Jett, Bob Carlisle, Jump 5 and dozens of others. Films include Iron Eagle and Wayne’s World, TV saw a Cable Ace nomination from a tune on Nickelodeon’s “Roundhouse.” Among the many co-writers he’s worked with and learned from are Phil Galdston (Save the Best For Last), Bolton (How Am I Supposed to Live Without You), Eric Kaz (Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt) and a host of elegant others.
Halligan brings his 25 years of hit-making experience to an exciting, interactive workshop that is a comfortable fit for beginners and advanced writers alike. Rather than copious ivory-tower speechifying, he focuses on the needs and talents of the individuals present, and shows them “one person’s opinions” about where they’re going wrong- and RIGHT! Technically, he addresses issues like prosody (the sound of the music matching the sound of the words) and melodic construction. Philosophically, he touches on things like “purity of purpose” and “writing what you know.” No one will leave the experience not feeling uplifted and encouraged, for that is Halligan’s reason for GIVING the workshop- much like the motivation behind his current touring band, six-piece Celtic pop\rock group Ceili Rain. Anyone who is serious about becoming a better songwriter and comes to this workshop experience will have come to the right place!
Steve Gajdosik - Catholic Radio
Stephen Gajdosik has been the President of the Catholic Radio Association since 2002. The CRA is the trade association for Catholic radio. It unites all involved in Catholic radio, from radio stations to program providers to Church Hierarchy, in solidarity and communion. Under Stephen’s direction, the CRA has blossomed into an association that unites virtually all Catholic radio stations in the United States, as well as several (arch)dioceses in the US, Caribbean and Pacific in answering the call of the Holy Spirit for Catholic Radio. Steve is the founder and former president of Totus Tuus Communications, Inc., which established Catholic radio in the Diocese of La Crosse, as well as the co-founder and former president of Starboard Broadcasting, Inc.
Steve’s resume also includes serving as DRE for a large Catholic parish in the Diocese of La Crosse, as well as serving on two diocesan committees. The purpose of one of these committees was specifically to evangelize and catechize adult men with the Faith. Steve is a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and Former General Agent for the Knights of Columbus, in which he specialized in estate and business planning. Steve holds a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Ave Maria University. Steve and his wife, Tonia, have five children.
John Cotton - Live Sound Techniques
John Cotton built his first PA at age 13, and was hooked on technical production from then on. A graduate of Binghamton University, where he studied engineering & theatre, John has since worked in Television, Theater, and recording studios, but has focused primarily on sound for live events. He has worked for regional and national sound companies, engineered at large festivals and in dive bars, and toured throughout the United States; most recently as Audio engineer & Production Manager for John Michael Talbot. As a Catholic working in both the secular and Christian Music communities, John has a unique perspective on the challenges that await artists and support staff in the Catholic Church.
